Whiting 1 : a new Halo Young Globular Cluster

چکیده

We report on BV I CCD photometry of a field centered in the region of the Galactic star cluster Whiting 1 down to V = 23.0. This cluster has never been studied insofar, and we provide for the first time estimates of its fundamental parameters, namely, radial extent, age, distance and reddening. Whiting 1 turns out to be a compact star cluster with a diameter of about 1. We find that the cluster is about 5 Gyr old and has a probable metal abundance around [Fe/H]= -1.20. Its position at b = −60.64 and at a heliocentric distance of about 45 kpc makes the cluster a rather strange object, surely not a disk old open cluster, but perhaps the youngest halo Globular Cluster insofar known. Subject headings: open clusters: general — open clusters: individual(Whiting 1)

Context. Recently, Carraro (2005) drew attention to the remarkable star cluster Whiting 1 by showing that it lies about 40 kpc from the Sun and is therefore unquestionably a member of the Galactic halo (b=-60.6 deg.). Its Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) indicated that Whiting 1 is very young (∼5 Gyrs) for a globular cluster. It is very likely that Whiting 1 originated in a dwarf galaxy that has s...

Comparing the properties of local globular cluster systems: implications for the formation of the Galactic halo

We investigate the hypothesis that some fraction of the globular clusters presently observed in the Galactic halo formed in external dwarf galaxies. This is done by means of a detailed comparison between the “old halo”, “young halo,” and “bulge/disk” sub-systems defined by Zinn (1993a) and the globular clusters in the LMC, SMC, and Fornax and Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We first use ...

Most of the globular clusters in the main body of the Galactic halo were formed almost simultaneously. However, globular cluster formation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies appears to have extended over a significant fraction of a Hubble time. This suggests that the factors which suppressed late-time formation of globulars in the main body of the Galactic halo were not operative in dwarf spheroidal ...

1. Cluster Ages in the Milky Way Halo Globular clusters make up less than 1% of the visible halo stars. These, in turn, form only a few percent of all the mass present in the potential well of a large galaxy. However, these ancient star systems contain information about the history of halo formation out of all proportion to their fraction of the total mass. The literature on globular cluster sy...
